Cahuita

Cahuita has about 3000 to 3500 inhabitants and was founded by turtle fishermen of Afro Caribbean ancestors.
Cahuita National Park and Coral Reef was founded on September 1970 as a National Monument of Cahuita.
In 1978 was declared National Park. The Park areas consist of 1,067 hectares and 600 hectares of Coral Reef and 22,400 of Marine area.
This wild refuge is the most developed in the Caribbean Coast and one of the most important in Costa Rica. This area has breathtaking white sand beaches keeping its natural beauty.
Cahuita comes from the Indigenous Bribri term ¨Kawe¨ which means ¨sangrillo¨ in Spanish (a regional tree) and ¨Ta¨ meaning ¨Punta¨ or ¨Point¨
The first settlers were Afro Caribbean Fishermen who settled where which is now Cahuita National Park. In the area o Puerto Vargas a dock was built in 1921 which served as a transportation system for travelers, commerce mainly wood. In 1930 the Limon Municipality built a Port near Perezoso River to serve Cahuiteños to transport their products to and from Puerto Limon.

Cahuita National Park received Bandera Azul   Ecologica ¨Ecological Blue Flag¨ .
