Willies-Tours-Cacao-House-and-Kekoldi-Iguana-Farm-Tour-Banana-Leaf-DemonstrationThe Cacao House and Kekoldi Iguana Farm Tour is a way to be enriched with Costa Rica culture. This tour is three to four hours educating you on the tradition of the Cacao Plant and the biology of The Green Iguanas.

The first stop is to the Cacao House on the Bri Bri reserve. The Bri Bri is an indigenous tribe found in the Souther Caribbean, Costa Rica. The tribe was originally living in the Talamanca Mountain range, primarily living off the land with no running water or electricity. The term “Bri Bri” represents the language, the tribe, the culture and the town. At the Cacao House you will learn the traditional process of making organic chocolate that has been passed down from generation to generation for over 300 years. Cacao has been used in the Bri Bri lifestyle for healing, purification and medicinal purposes. At the end of the demonstration there will be time for questions and chocolate tasting. Organic chocolate makes for the perfect unique souvenir, bringing the rich flavor home.

The second stop is to the Kekoldi Iguana Farm, run by a Kekoldi Family which is an indigenous tribe related to the Bri Bri. The Iguana Farm was founded by a Canadian Foundation to prevent the extinction of the Green Iguanas. They were going close to extinction due to human consumption and the pet market. The Kekoldi’s wanted to replenish and give back to the forest. Green Iguanas are anywhere from four to six feet in length, ranging in colors from green to dullish gray. They are found in tropical rainforest areas starting in Mexico all the way down to southern Brazil. Typically you will find Green Iguanas basking in the sun since they are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature corresponds with the weather, they gain warmth from being in the rays of the sun. Green Iguanas are also diurnal animals, meaning they are awake during the day and sleep at night.

At Willie’s Tours Costa Rica we strive to enhance our clients experience while visiting Costa Rica. This tour is interactive allowing for travelers to get a first hand look at a local culture. We want people to be immersed in the area, expanding their knowledge, ideas and beliefs. The Bri Bri has remained relatively isolated from Western civilization over the years.
