Before the Spanish Conquest, the natives of this region referred to Volcano Irazu as “Istaru” which stands for mountain of tremors and thunders. Now the active volcano, that lies near the city of Cartago, has the name “El Coloso” due to the amount of catastrophes it has caused in the past. As of today, Volcan Irazu has had a total of 23 eruptions dating back to the first in 1723. From the outskirts of Volcan Irazu spring rivers such as the Reventazon, Sarapiqui, Sucio and Toro Amarillo Rivers.
The tour begins by picking you up at your hotel and continuing with a five hour drive on scenic backroads. The route takes you through the country side of the central valley and through small towns such as Turrialba and Pacayas. You will pass rolling hills covered in lush green vegetation, creating exceptionally beautiful landscapes.
Arriving at the national park you will spend two hours learning the history of the area while exploring three craters. You will walk on a path until you hit volcanic ash where the craters extend beneath you. Clouds encircle the area where unique vegetation covers the volcanic soil with large leafs and plants.
