Tours Bri Bri And Kekoldi Kekoldi Indigenous Territory
Kekoldi Indigenous Territory
The Kekoldi Indigenous Territory Tour is a five to six hour cultural and biological experience. This tour brings you back in time traveling an old highway immersing yourself in the jungle where most tourists don’t go. The path has been the main road of transportation for the Kekoldi Community and other Indigenous tribes in the region. It was the main highway that for hundreds of years served as the route to Panama. Despite the amount of travel over the years the richness of the surrounding forest has been preserved and has maintained it’s natural beauty.
The tour begins with a member of the Kekoldi community greeting you, this person serving as a second guide on the tour. They will take you up through the lush forest into the main Kekoldi community.
Along the hike you will get beautiful views of the full rich green rain forest and animals in the surrounding trees. While hiking, the local history and the flora and fauna will be described.
Once you arrive in the community you will be welcomed by Doña Maura, the president of the Kekoldi committee. She will give an overview of the Kekoldi Territory and tribe, describing who they are, how they live, their pre-Colombian lifestyle, and their religious practices and ceremonies. Throughout the overview there is plenty of time to ask questions. The next destination is the Kekoldi Tower and Observatory. You will hike another 30 minutes to reach the tower where you will ascend to the incredible sight overlooking the Caribbean sea, the Talamanca Mountain Range and the Panamanian Mountains. Make sure to look through binoculars to see all the migrating butterflies and birds that come to the region, making the treetops their home. Following the observatory is the Kekoldi Waterfall, you will hike an hour to reach this exotic and refreshing destination. The waterfall was once a ceremonial ground for healing rituals. Today, it is still visited by people in the territory for recreational purposes. There is time to swim and relax in the cool refreshing waters, cascading from above. The waterfall is extremely beautiful, a perfect picture opportunity.
After a long hike and refreshing swim, you will return to the community for a traditional organic Kekoldi lunch, prepared by Doña Maura. The lunch will include a variety of foods including: yuca, ayote, chayote, palmito, grilled farmed chicken accompanied by a traditional drink of chocolate iced tea.
