The Irazú Volcano National Park Tour is a great combination of the majestic Irazú Volcano, Colonial Cartago and Orosi Valley, 1600’s Colonial Costa Rica.
Before the Spanish conquest, the Irazú Volcano was known by the natives as “Istarú” which means “mountain of thunder and quakes”. Now, this dormant Volcano located near Cartago city is called “The Colossus” due to the quantity of disasters it caused in the past. Until now, the Irazú Volcano has a total of 23 eruptions to its credit, the first one was in 1723. Several rivers such as Reventazón, Sarapiquí, Sucio and Toro Amarillo are part of the Volcano surroundings. Turrialba Volacano National Park is only few kilometers away and you can see it once you are at the Top of Irazu Volcano observatory.
This one day tour begins picking you up at your hotel in San Jose at 8:o0 am, one hour trip on secondary roads through the Central Valley fields and villages such as Paraiso and Cervantes. You will spend about one hour and 30 minutes exploring the Crater and hiking to the observatory which is the highsest point, 3432 meters above seas level.
The second stop is Orosi Valley, a colonial town, its origianal plaza and church founded in 1743 during the Colonial Period.
The third stop is Ujarras Church Ruins, founded in 1564 by Vasquez de Coronado in order to Cristianize the Huetares Indigenous Natives.
Finally, the Fourth stop in Colonial Cartago, Basílica de Los Angeles, and the Old Spanish settlement and Capital during the Colonial Period.
Additionally, this Tour is a Scenic Road Trip where you will enjoy Costa Rica’s Central Mountain Range, you must take many pictures to document your experience.
